Inlakesh [2010]

You´re a piece of me
And yet for a long time you´re not
You´re a veil of an echo of a memory
And that´s what
That’s what I want you to stay
Stay
A veil, a veil of an echo, a veil
I chose carefully every single thought
I´m afraid of thinking ( feeling ) too much
No I don´t wanna get back to where my thoughts are not enough
A veil, a veil of an echo, a veil
Stay a veil, a veil of an echo, a veil
Our hearts ache to meet
But we know we oughtn´t see
Cuz when we see we speak
And when we speak we can hardly breath
Then we kiss
And that´s where it all begins
That´s where it all begins
Again
Erase me from the map
Erase me from your head
Erase me from your heart
And I’ll appear in front of you
Erase me from the map
Erase me from your head
Erase me from your heart
And I’ll appear in front of you
In the new light
Forget everything I say
All the things I do
Forget me completely
And I’ll appear in front of you
In new form
In new shape
With new taste
And I’ll appear in front of you
In the new light
And I’ll appear in the from of you
Not as what you make of me
But as what I am
A mountain that holds in all the sleep we’re missing but could have
A mountain that holds in all the sleep we’re missing and will never have.
Does the constant buzz in my ears mean
Somebody is thinkin‘ of me?
Or is there something wrong
From listenin‘ to too much music all day and all night long?
Does the constant ache in my heart mean
It’s too small for all the love it’s holding?
Or is there just something wrong with it
From never stoppin‘
Never missin‘ a beat?
It keeps on, it keeps on, it keeps on goin‘
Precisely
As long, as long, as long, as it doesn‘t get broken
Or a knife doesn’t get stuck right through it
Does the constant itch in my eyes mean
Something got stuck in?
Or is there something wrong
From seeing only, only, only, only what they want?
Would you still love me
If I told you my real name?
Would you still like to marry me
After I introduced you to my wife and kids?
If I had nothing else but love to give?
Would you become my better half
If I left all the spare pieces behind?
If I had no work, no money, no house, no mule, or a car
In which I could take you for an easy ride?
Would you still love me
If I told you my real name?
If I kept coming home on all fours every second night at 3am?
Just for you to see the worst of me
Would you keep on letting me in?
Would you become my better half
If I´d left the spare pieces behind?
If I had no work, no money, no house, no mule or a car
In which I could take you for an easy ride?
I´ll do you no harm
I´ll break your arms and legs
If it´s the only way
To keep you close to me
If it´s the only way
I´ll do you no harm
I´ll break your arms and legs
If it´s the only way
To keep you close
To keep you mine
To keep you mine
To keep you mine
Only mine
I´ll do you no harm
I´ll break your legs and arms
If it´s the only way
To keep you home for a while
I´ll do everything I see in your eyes
I´ll bring you the blue from the rivers and the skies
I´ll bring it all to you
Until your bones heal
And you´ll be able to hold a glass
Until your bones heal
And you´ll be able to leave me
You´ll be able to go
I´ll do you no harm
I´ll break your legs and arms
If it´s the only way
To keep you close to me
If it´s the only way
If it´s the only way
If it´s the only way
I'll Share With Everyone Not Lucky Like Me
I never get tired of sleep
And I do
I do it for free
But I can´t ever get enough of it
As I can´t stop
My mind from singing
Tu tu tu do do do
Tu tu tu do do do
Tu tu tu do do do
Some days I get to bed on time
Some days I get to bed late
Either way, every night alone or with you
In tender embrace
I’m waitin‘ for the song that will come next
Will I remember it in the morning?
Will you still be there?
Don’t you worry my darlin‘
That you’re missin‘ somethin‘
Can’t you see the trees and mountains
For centuries standing still
Never complaining
Don’t you worry my darlin‘
That you’re missin‘ somethin‘
Can’t you see the trees and mountains
For centuries standing still
Never askin‘
Where I’ve been?
Where I’ve been?
When and where will I go?

In the ancient Mayan greeting inlak’ech (which loosely translates as You are my other me...), the otherness of faces vanishes. In the new songs from their album Inlakesh, the Czech band Please The Trees finds a unity with the freedom of realization that we are different images of the same. Inlakesh transcends the otherness of the surface of things and shows the band in a more transparent light. The haze, that blurred the outlined sphere of action on their debut album Lion Prayer (2007 Absent Hour Records), now dissipates. On Inlakesh, Please The Trees define themselves through a more determined approach in songs as well as in their overall sound.
On their second full-length studio opus, Please The Trees further elaborate on themes that have enshrouded them since their first shows. Inlakesh calls a truce between divided souls. This reconciliation opens new possibilities. The ancient concept of the duality of human relationships – the relationship between humans and nature or things – continues to be an undying inspiration for Please The Trees. Inlakesh is a handshake, a diffusion, and a mutual confrontation.

Following the loss and replacement of several band members, Inlakesh represents a newly acquired closeness for Please The Trees. After a change of drummer (replaced by David Koukal for two years now) and a decision to eliminate the keyboard position (after Dan Cerny left the band), Please the Trees underwent yet another change. While recording Inlakesh, bassist Karel Sychra was replaced by Miroslav Syrny, enriching the band as the only member with formal music education. The firm core of Please The Trees – singer/frontman/guitarist/lyricist Václav Havelka and guitarist Zdenek ’Zok’ Kadlec – remains, of course, invariable.
On Inlakesh, Please The Trees also demonstrate that for some time now they are no longer just a convenient fusion of post-rockers Some Other Place and Havelka‘s solo one-man project selFbrush. The album Inlakesh captures the band as a solid unit, one with an apparent mission and its source of inspiration remelted into an original form. Ringingly airy guitars bridge the passion for a laid-back alternative rock, having its roots in the Wild West, and a melancholic folk-songwriting.
“New songs started to emerge immediately after the recording of our debut album Lion Prayer, under the influence of the quickly and intuitively born song Red Sky,“ reveals PTT frontman Václav Havelka, who adds: “We recorded the entire album Inlakesh during two weeklong sessions in the home environment of an improvised studio at our practice space in the city of Tabor – the ‘Base Camp’ (camp = tabor in Czech) at Zok’s house.

The album has also been enriched by several guest artists. For example, Only Way, Havelka’s duet with singer Veronika Buriankova from the band Veena, is just as natural of an outcome of their collaboration as Martin Kosan’s trumpet, David Babka’s pedal steel guitar or Bethany Lacktorin’s violin accompaniment. The musicians with whom Please the Trees found a kindred spirit line the band‘s path, which led not only to the final sound of the album Inlakesh, but of Please The Trees as a whole.
Inlakesh received its final form through collaboration with producer Michal ‘Amak’ Stastny. The final track, Be Still, recorded in the bathroom in Amak’s apartment, once again closes the circle and shakes hands with the position Havelka takes on his solo project selFbrush.
The insinuated intimacy is also revealed in the graphic rendering of Inlakesh. The photographs and design of the album cover, created in collaboration with photographer Karin Zadrick, offers a look into Havelka’s hundred-year-old family archive. On Inlakesh, the interlocking of themes and the admission of roots are for Please the Trees the link to the essence of their music. They play for one another. For Czech Republic they released the album in strictly limited edition of 400 copies on Havelka’s samizdat recording company Absent Hour Records. Please The Trees offer Inlakesh to anyone who wants to listen to a band that has clearly defined its own space, one that crosses borders and transcends the limits of music categorization.
In March 2010 Please The Trees toured the U.S. successfuly for the first time. They performed at the prestigious international music festival South by Southwest (SXSW) in Austin, Texas, guest appeared on shows with Akron/Family, Warpaint and Vetiver.
